Ask Important Questions When Buying A Used Car

Used Car

Buying a used car is time-consuming and can be confusing. To make it easier, we’ve prepared a handy list of questions you should ask the salesman before you buy.

Q : Can I see the service history?

Ask to see the car’s full service history to reassure yourself that it has been looked after properly. The service book should have stamps from dealerships or bone fide mechanics. If it’s an older model, ask if there are receipts for work done.

Q: Can I see the MOT certificates?

MOTs are required by law on any car over three years old. You can find out when the MOT is due or check on its current status by searching on the government’s MOT website. Simply enter the vehicle registration mark and either the MOT test number (from the VT20 test certificate) or the document reference number which can be found on the V5C registration certificate. Reputable car salespeople such as Alfa Romeo dealers, will be happy to assist you with these sort of checks.

Q: How many miles has it covered?

The service history and MOT records will help to establish the correct mileage, so make sure that what is documented matches what’s on the mileometer/odometer. If there are discrepancies or if the numbers on the dial do not line up perfectly, the car may been clocked. Reputable dealers will ensure this does not occur. On average, a car will cover around 10,000–12,000 miles a year, so check that your potential purchase falls roughly in line with this for its age.

Q: Has the car been in an accident?

It’s important to establish if the vehicle has had any major repair work carried out which might affect its resale value or performance. Ask the dealership about any repair work it has carried out itself on the vehicle including any replacement parts. If the car has been thoroughly serviced by the dealership, it means you won’t have to worry about mechanical issues for a while.

Q: What’s included in the price?

Is the dealer offering any incentives for you to make the purchase? For instance, will the car be taxed for you? Will there be a full tank of petrol to drive away with? Even small extras, such as car mats, are worth having – and if you don’t ask, you’ll never get them.

Q: What does the warranty cover?

If you’re being offered a warranty you need to understand exactly how much it’s going to cost and what it covers. Ask for a written explanation and make sure you read it thoroughly for any exclusions before signing.

Finally, make sure you ask your salesperson about any problems with the car you’re considering. They are required by law to answer your questions honestly. By asking these questions and keeping your wits about you, you can be confident that you’ll get a good vehicle at a fair price.
